To get you motivated before the ride, first make your way to Bittersweet Park on 35th Avenue and 16th Street at 7 p.m. Friday. Funkiphino is playing as a part of theNeighborhood Nights movie and concert series the city puts on every year.

I can’t believe this band is playing a free show in a cool park like Bittersweet. I first heard them last year, when the many members (looks like 10 on the Web site) saved my life in the BolderBoulder, giving me a shot of adrenaline with a funky version of Jamiroquai’s “Canned Heat” just as I was struggling to finish the race strong.

I love horn bands, and I love female lead singers, and this band has two! Funkiphino’s latest album contains “State of Groove,” one of the better funk songs I’ve heard in recent years (it beats almost anything on the Brand New Heavies’ latest fine album) and featured on the BolderBoulder’s compilation album.

Get out and catch a free show of this terrific group, which also features a couple former Greeley residents and graduates from the University of Northern Colorado, while you still can. Then head down to the Moonlight Ride – the starting line is less than a mile away.

I’ll be watching a Catholic wedding, dreaming of funky rhythms and a bike by moonlight.
